Over 26 years of caring for birds

Our socialized parrots include Cockatoos, Amazons, African Grays, Macaws, Conures, Senegals, Cockatiels, and Lovebirds. Beauty in song and color, our large selection of finches and canaries, will delight all. Since variety is the spice of life when it comes to your bird’s diet, our supply of organic pellets are certain to provide your bird with a healthy, long life.

We also stock packaged treats that will interest even a finicky bird. We stock natural branches, swings, ropes, toys and playperches to help keep your bird physically and mentally healthy. Our quality selection of cages will ease the decision of the right home for your bird.

Claudia and Bob Hunka, and the patient and determined staff, are dedicated to serving you and your companion. As a result your support has made Your Basic Bird is a Berkeley institution.

Our fascination with birds began as a hobby in the late 1970's with finches, lories and hanging parrots. When Claudia & Bob purchased Your Basic Bird in 1981, the hobby had become their business. Your Basic Bird's primary focus has always been birds but they offer a full line of dog, cat & small animal supplies and other companion animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, rats & hamsters). We enjoy hearing about the many animals that we have placed in loving homes over the years.

In 1999, when Andrea's decided to close their business in the Elmwood Your Basic Bird remodeled by adding 6' of width to the store. This change created more space for large wrought iron cages, free standing playtrees for birds, an expanded wild bird center and many more supplies for companion animals. Our second aviary was removed in order to create an isolated baby bird area fof handfeeding of our psittacine birds.

After 38 years the fascination is still there and we continue to learn more about birds ever day. Claudia always says that this passion for these amazing creatures is "in your blood" once you have experienced birds it is difficult to imagine life without them.
