Bernard Anderson
"Doctor B"

West Coast Blues 2005
Blues Saxophone of the Year

Bernard Anderson is a consummate sax artist, at home in both the worlds of rock and jazz. Bernard "Doctor B" Anderson studied music throughout public school, and continued his music studies at Alameda and Laney Colleges in Oakland. He spent several years on the road in top-40's bands and returned to the blues scene working with Sonny Rhodes, Charles Brown, Joe Henderson, Jimmy McCracklin, John Handy, Taj Mahal, Carla Thomas, Mary Wells, Al Wilson, and Queen Ida.

with QUEEN IDA
Doctor B met Queen Ida while touring with Maxine Howard in West Germany during the summer of 1988. He joined her band in November, 1988. His solos with the Queen Ida band are garnering enthusiastic ovations, and he feels that zydeco gives him an uncharted musical territory where he can unleash his creativity. He has his own band, The Old School Band, and is the sax player on some of Sonny Rhodes' recordings.

with THE OLD SCHOOL BAND
It's an East Coast meets West Coast approach to swing and R&B, as this five-piece band hits well-known and rare gems of those styles for the dance crowd. Led by Doctor B on saxophone (tenor and baritone) and lead vocals, the group includes drummer Brian Berson (of Blues Alley and Red Archibald).

Songs come from Louis Jordan, Motown, slower West Coast swing, James Brown, Chicago and Memphis. Doctor B has issued a solo CD, "Yes, There Is a Doctor in the House."

What the critics are saying . . .

"More genuinely funky . . . a refreshing change . . .
How can you go wrong . . ."
- Marc Bristol, Blue Suede News

". . . reedman Bernard Anderson is a particular treat . . ."
– Chip Deffaa, New York Post

". . . his sweet tone swimming like butter atop hot grits . . ."
– Lee Hildebrand, San Francisco Bay Guardian

"Bernard Anderson may well be the best rock-blues saxophonist ever to play in Australia . . ."
– Bruce Elder, Weekend Australian, Sydney Australia

"Bernard Anderson just might be the best young Blues/R&B sax-player in North America today . . . At Harpo's, it was evident from the first honks that this was a reedman of exceptional talent and taste and his sax solos during the evening quickly had his audience members anticipating his next sweet foray. Now I've always gotten miffed when people, out of ignorance, would say things like 'Hey Springsteen's Sax-Player is really good, eh?' Meanwhile, all I would hear was noise and histrionics, no subtlety, I'd say 'Go listen to King Curtis, Gene Barge, or JT Brown.' Now, I'll say, 'Listen to Bernard Anderson!' This CD is modern black R&B with strong funk and rap influence but it is exquisitely melodic and the caliber of talent and production is regal! Bernard shines throughout and this CD is documented proof as to his level of talent and song-writing brilliance."
–Andy "Blues Boy" Grigg, West Coast Blues Review
